How To Make an Effective Apology & Better Your Relationships

Today, we keep it short and sweet and super impactful!!

Apologies play a really important role in building strong personal relationships. At Kong Academy, we believe in equipping children with the necessary tools to thrive (spoiler alert: our apology system works for adults too!). Let’s break away from the usual “say sorry” approach, which never solves anything and discover our 5 Steps to Make a Truly Effective Apology.

Step 1: Say, “I’m sorry”

Acknowledge the need for an apology.

Step 2: Specify the Offense

Take ownership and express exactly what you’re sorry for (never followed by a “but you did xyz”)

Step 3: Plan for Improvement

Share how you’ll prevent a repeat in the future (needs to be a positive action, not “I won’t hit you again in the future”, instead, e.g. “If I get angry, I’ll walk away to have space and can calm down.”)

Step 4: Seek Reconciliation

Ask, “Is there anything I can do to make up for it?”

Step 5: Embrace Forgiveness

Grant the power to the wronged person by asking, “Do you forgive me?”

By following these steps, children develop empathy, strengthen relationships, and gain independence in their apologies. Let’s empower them to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
